Latest ABC figures show The Economist’s global circulation remains strong at 1.6 million

Social audiences increased by 7% to 56m

LONDON - August 13, 2020 - Today’s release of the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) January to June (JJ20) certificates show that The Economist’s circulation remains strong at 1,651,185.


Similar to other publishers, ABC has also issued a special covid-19 certificate for The Economist for the period April-June 2020. This period saw a rise in digital subscriptions as readers turned to The Economist to understand the global pandemic. This period also saw a decline in print circulation due to distribution challenges and low newsstand volumes due to worldwide travel lockdowns. Social media followers also increased by 7% (total of 56 million) compared with six months ago.


Global highlights of the JJ20 certificate:

Worldwide (print + digital) circulation is 1,651,185

Global print circulation is 906,611 and Global digital circulation is 744,574

The print vs digital split is 55:45

Social audiences increased by more than 3.6 million, reaching 56,075,423


Global highlights of the covid-19 April-June 2020 certificate:

Worldwide (print + digital) circulation is 1,527,290

Global print circulation is 731,412 and Global digital circulation is 795,878

UK edition circulation (ex-Ireland) is flat at 286,136

Digital circulation is steady at 130,777

Print circulation is 155,359

UK circulation accounts for 17% of global circulation

Print: Digital split is 54:46

North America JJ20 highlights include:

Combined print and digital circulation is 924,724

North American circulation accounts for 56% of global circulation

Print: Digital split is 58:42


Europe JJ20 highlights include:

Overall circulation in Europe (includes Ireland) is 252,592

European circulation accounts for 15% of global circulation

Print:Digital split is 52:48

APAC JJ20 highlights include:

Overall circulation in Asia/Pacific is 147,225

APAC circulation accounts for 9% of global circulation

Print:Digital split is 46:54
