Delivery and Accountability: Fifth World Ocean Summit Drives Pledges for Sustainable Ocean Development

Taking place March 7-9 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, the World Ocean Summit is the most diverse and important global gathering on the ocean. Political leaders and policymakers, heads of global business, scientists, NGOs and multilaterals representing over 50 countries have gathered for a frank and forward-looking discussion on how to turn pledges about sustainable development of the ocean into reality.

Over the course of three days, the fifth World Ocean Summit invites participants from around the world to evaluate strategies and devise new solutions to urgent problems in the ocean. More than 70 world leaders will speak at the event including Enrique Peña-Nieto, the President of Mexico; Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, the President of Iceland as well as members of businesses and organizations including the European Investment Bank, the Ocean Conservancy, UN Environment, Addidas and Coca-Cola.

A number of organizations will also announce initiatives and news including The Nature Conservancy, XL Catlin and The Environmental Defense Fund. The aforementioned announcements will set the stage for the next phase of improvement and business innovation in regards to the world's oceans.
